Anyone who knows me well, knows I love a good t-shirt. With that in mind, I was interested to see the media conferences following both Wimbledon singles finals this year.
Serena Williams fronted up with the message "are you looking at my titles?" emblazoned across her tightly fitted tee, drawing attention to the fact that she remains #2 in the world even though she now has eleven grand slam titles compared to world #1 Dinara Safina's total of zero. She went on to get that off her chest verbally throughout the presser. It was her key message and it was effectively conveyed, for better or worse.
Williams may even have had a second message in mind as well after it was revealed earlier in the week that good looks determine which women’s matches get centre court and maximum media exposure at Wimbledon.
All that said, I am not going to ignore the irony here. Serena wears deliberately eye-catching outfits, so I'm sure she is not too bothered by people ogling her ample titles. One just needs to cast their mind back to that Stella McCartney dress she almost wore at a London movie premiere in 2004.
Over to Roger Federer, who followed suit after his epic 16-14 in the fifth win over Andy Roddick by appearing for an interview in a t-shirt stating "there is no finish line." His obvious intent was to ensure us all he was far from done despite the fact he had just secured his fifteenth grand slam title, eclipsing Pete Sampras' previous record of fourteen and arguably making him the greatest ever. He talked about his passion and desire to keep playing for years to come thus quashing any rumours of his imminent retirement.
The power of the t-shirt, huh? It definitely works. From the early days of "Shit Happens" it's still clearly a pretty effective medium. I think I'll have my clients appear in aptly messaged t-shirts from now on. Ideas on the back of a beer coaster, please. Ah, that's another story!

The image below says it all. Rafael Nadal took on Roger Federer in front of 7000 people in Palma de Mallorca last night on a half-grass, half-clay tennis court. Having to change shoes at every change of ends was probably a bit tiresome, but the pair put on a great show, with Nadal winning in a blockbuster third set tiebreaker, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(10). Maybe the home crowd support got him over the line. Seems like a fun concept, wish I'd been there!
